Yesterday, I ate with my eyes closed. Have you done this before? I don’t think I’d ever done it — except once at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Boston where I had a steak covered in blue cheese that came to me sizzling on a platter and I closed my eyes to savor it.
But yesterday, I did it because I was trying not to read. I read a quote recently that was something like, “Have you ever seen a man eating while reading. This man is deluded. He neither eats nor does he read.” It’s from a book called What the Buddha Taught.
It thought it was kind of harsh to call the man deluded. Also, I do this every day. Compulsively. It’s almost like I can’t eat unless I have something to read. So I was like, maybe there’s something to this whole just focusing on one thing at a time. So I tried to eat without reading but my eyes would wander, looking for distractions. So finally I closed them and I was like WHOA my food tastes like stuff! Like this yogurt, it tastes like cheese! CHEESE!
It helped me eat slower too because I couldn’t always find the bowl or wouldn’t know exactly where the spoon was in relation to my mouth.
But today I’m back to my old habits of reating. The path is long, Buddha. The path is long.
